Months ago one of my favorite cousins said that I should come up with a homemade hamburger helper dish. Well, months later I am.
We never had hamburger helper growing up. That would have been considered a treat. My mom was one of those people who thought if you could just make it from scratch – why would you buy it? Ah ha – so that’s where I get it!
There are times where I look at the clock and am in a panic that it’s a quarter to 6 and I just realized I have 2 kids and a husband to feed. Should we just go grab something? and if so what? Everything (almost everything) is so unhealthy – and to be honest, it’s never that great anyway…I wonder how quick I can brown hamburger and make something…..
Enter homemade hamburger helper.
This recipe was done in a half an hour from start to finish – that is including browning hamburger that was rock solid. This is a pretty versatile recipe – you could add in peas, mushrooms, carrots or tomatoes if you wanted. I used Kerrygold Blarney Castle cheese to stir in at the end. It creates this cheesy (obviously) smooth, creamy sauce that is wonderful. Since I’m not the one to compare the boxed to the homemade, I asked the man who was brought up on hamburger helper. x10. He said “good job”. That’s about as good as it gets folks. 🙂
If you went out to get “something” it would take at least a half an hour – here at least – and we live pretty close to everything. So why not grab a little hamburger, noodles and cheese, and make this warm dish for your family. – and you know exactly what’s in it 🙂
I used organic white pasta noodles. You could easily use gluten free (brown rice), whole wheat or even quinoa noodles.
I started heating the milk, broth and noodles while the hamburger was still browning.
Add the hamburger and seasonings in with the noodles and sauce mixture once the hamburger is done.
Once the noodles are done, stir in the velvety cheese. Let it set for a few minutes and there you have it.
Supper done in no time at all.
So Kip – stop by my house and I can share some Blarney Castle Cheese with you – or better yet – join us for supper sometime!
